A Happier and Haler Rusty-Farian

Oh My!

Well, so much has happened!

1. Rusty is using the doggie door.
I would come home, let him out, and voila! There wasn't the urge to rush out as there had been in earlier weeks! I was troubled, and thought, perhaps, he had been piddling away in some nether region of the house. Then, Saturday last, I heard a sound - a click. I thought it was the doggie door, but was too busy to investigate. Rusty was missing, though, and while I was in the kitchen, he is usually entranced by thoughts of food. How odd for him to be missing! Then I heard that 'click' sound again, and Rusty came around the corner. 'Hmmmm!' I thought. Later, I actually saw him following Skally out the door. And I went out, too (through the sliders, you ninny!) to look at the yard, covered with leaves. I went back in and closed the door. Not 2 minutes later, but Rusty came romping in through the doggie door! Hallelujiah! Later in the week, I came home to discover Rusty missing. I searched all around the house, but to no avail. I then went outside and here he came, galumphing from the back of the yard where all the trees are. He came bounding up the stairs and into the house. I am sooooo pleased!

The other night, Skally and Rusty packed to thwart off another dog who was trying to play with me. Skally hasn't run about so much in ages! They were both so tired!

Earlier in the month, we went to visit Mum. The ride was much nicer as they are now comfortable with each other, and try not to tread on each other's toes. They had a wonderful time walking, enjoying the beaches, and just relaxing. They were happy, though, to get back home.

Rusty has continued to lose weight, and he is quite the social fellow. Skally is demure, coy and has once again become affectionate with me - something I missed terribly - she was angry over the loss of her solitude - but they make a lovely couple.

We're happy.

Time.......

Well, it's been a little while. Much has probably happened since I last wrote. What? Well, let my addlepated little mind wrap itself around the past couple of weeks.

Skally's energy had been waning. I gave that up to her age, and the fact that she wasn't completely thrilled about having to share with another being. All seemed well, until one day I came home to find her in the bed, with the bed soaking in her urine. Yuck! I know.

However, my first thought was 'What is going on?' This was completely out of character for her. I also noticed that there was poop two days (not in a row) in different parts of the house, when I awoke. She wasn't going to tell me anything - this, a little vomit, and peeing at night, as well as during the day in the house. This from the girl who, as I recalled from her youth, howled when she couldn't quite make it outside (hence the dog door); this happened once. It had been approximately 12 years since anything like this had happened - and it was one time when she darted through the house to go outside - I didn't open the door quickly enough - never happened again - until now.

I decided, after washing all the bed linens, etc, that we needed to walk further, and I needed to ensure all the pee was out of her before I headed off to work. Didn't happen. She seemed quite tenuous to go outside. In fact, she nearly flat out refused! It was as though she had been traumatized by something out there.

I was perplexed. After watching her a few days, and realizing this wasn't going anywhere good, I called Dr. Leddy.

We went to the good doctor's office, weighed Rusty (78 pounds! Yay! Down 9!) and Skally (68 Pounds - good sign). She examined her, and we determined to try hormone therapy - yes, the same therapy as women have after menopause.

So, after the first pill, the next day, Skally had more vigor. She seemed much better. After the second day, even more.

The second night, Rusty, apparently used to having his way with the chew bones, etc., in the family room, decided to wander in to Skally's territory which had been fine before - until that night!

I was in the other room, when I heard a great violent and raging cocophony. Skally had her mojo back, and she warn't gwanna give up her bone! It was settled, and Rusty came running to me. Skally eyed him warily.

I was thrilled. She was coming back to herself, as I hadn't seen in months!

Dr. Leddy will phone tomorrow or Wednesday with results of the tests they ran on her; I'm praying there isn't anything else that might be amiss - like kidneys, or cancer or anything else; I can't stand to lose her - she must needs be immortal.

Other than that, Rusty is coming along well. After my chat with him about dawdling on walks, he seems to have given in. He trots at a pace with Skally, and it seems as though they make fantastic pack partners in this milieu.

At the park, Rusty is playing, and Skally began to show her colors from months ago, where she plays and barks with the other dogs - usually through the fence with Ziggy, where they talk smack.

I pray all is well with the world.

Yesterday, too, a woman approached me and began to ask about Syd & Cubby. Her dog used to play with them years ago, and I had forgotten who they were. When she mentioned her dog's name, I remembered. He had died of cancer- I thought they had just moved. She was moved by the stories of Syd & Cubby and their ailments that led to their deaths. It was sobering.

So, now, after our walk, and a little breakie, Daddy is going to take his shower and hie to work and the gym. When I get home, I hope it's warmer than the 37 degrees it is outside, and we'll head to the park to play with Bella Blue, Pepper, and all the others we have come to know.

And Skally will be even better!

Mid Week October 6, 2011

I've created a monster.

I've created a monster.

I've created a monster.

Did I mention I believe I've created a monster?

Yesterday, rather than hit the gym (I figured if Rusty could go on a "boot camp regimen, then must I!), I rushed home to beat the rain. Skally was asleep - but not for long. Rusty was gadding about the house, happy to see me, and happy to be let out (he still can't understand the doggie door).

As soon as I opened the door to the garage, they both rushed to the car. I put Rusty in - it seems as though he was ready to leap in, but doubtful he could - and Skally immediately followed suit (she gets in the front. Usually, she wanders around the car, making me stalk her - much as Syd used to do - until finally she wanted to get in.). WE got to the park - nice, sunny, and moist.

Skally got out with her leash on, and Rusty came out the back, but didn't stop when I told him. No. He began to rush to the dog park. Yes. He ran ahead of us, and when I told him to stop, he did, then turned, smiled and with a little leap of evil, he continued to run.

Upon entering the park, Rusty ran over to a new dog, and then did his business, as did Skally. I went over to talk with Victor, and they double-teamed me, barking and refusing to let up. So, I ran with them. And run they did. Rusty was trying to out-maneuver Skally, and Pepper and Rusty were vying for me - whilst Skally went a'sniffin'. This continued for several minutes, with Skally coming to me and me chasing her while Rusty was off chasing a young yellow lab and Pepper.

Rusty, after a bit, realized that if he were to pick up a ball, other dogs would come to him - as it was their ball they had been playing with. This was quite new. I even threw a ball for him a short distance, and he fetched it, brought it back, and refused to let go, no matter what. There was evil mischief in his liver-colored eyes!

I found a rope for him to tug with, and Pepper took the other side. Rusty pulled, and Pepper let go- Rusty went tumbling, looking at me as though I had done him a great injustice - so rope was no longer an option, at least for now.

This was how it continued, until the rain began to come down heavier and heavier. Others left, and some more came, but my two just stood there, as statues, guarding me, growing damper and damper. So we left.

At home, the frivolity continued for them both. I swear. It has been so long since I've seen Skally be so animated for so long. The aura of the house is good.

This morning, though, neither had tons of energy - but there was something in the air that made them badger me until we finally left and walked; Rusty, though, was hardly the epitome of energy once out the door. It wasn't until we crossed back over the street on the downhill side of the hill that he picked up steam - and then it was to take the short walk route, and they both flew.

This is happiness, with a touch of evil mischief.

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Wow! It has been some time since I posted, and things are looking up!

Well, Rusty and Skally are getting along famously. There was one instance where Rusty knocked Skally when we were leaving for our morning walk, and Skally "vented" on Rusty - he certainly took notice! But, since then, they seem to be doing fine. I did have the talk with Skally that she was a hunter and he was a herder, so it was fine they had different jobs, but he was her underling. That seemed to do the trick.

Since then, we have visited with Miss Yvonne and her cat, Nitro, for lunch. The dogs wandered around her yard - Skally kept schlepping through the gardens, much to Miss Y's chagrin, until she had to be leashed and kept by my side. Rusty, just kept near me - apparently hoping I wasn't leaving him. Well, he got his wish, of course.

We also went to PetUtopia for the Doggie Spa Day. No, we didn't get the pawdicures, or the massages, but we did buy some things for noshes, and they had their pictures taken by Aaron McNally from 12amphotography. They are marvelous pictures. When I posted them, I received all sorts of comments on Facebook, and other people came up to me to compliment them. I would certainly expect no less of my pups and their photos - they are the most beautiful critters in the world!

Last weekend, we headed up north to Port Angeles to spend the weekend with my mum. Of course, Skally spent the entire trip with her head out the window enjoying the freeway breezes! I was a little concerned, as she stayed in the backseat with Rusty, but then I figured they were bonding. We finally arrived around 930 pm to Mum's. When she first saw Rusty, she said, "Oh my God! He's huge! He's as big as a piece of furiture!" I assured her he had lost a ton of weight (which he has - probably close to 15 pounds), and she would appreciate him. She did. But she has a strong affinity for Skally - I overheard her talking to Skally, spoiling her - she later denied it, but it did my heart good.

We went for a walk on Ediz Hook, where I was happily surprised to see Rusty hopping on logs and moving gracefully over them. His back legs are much stronger now! He got more workouts when we went to Salt Creek Park, and Lincoln Park. They spent most of that time off leash, rushing through the woods, brush, and Skally immersed herself often in the waters, either of the resevoir, or the straits. She was in heaven, as was Rusty.

ON the day we left, we headed out to Port Williams, and Mum wasn't feeling so good. The tide was rather high, and we had to do some extra climbing to get to the real beach, which is more of a marsh and spit. As Mum was feeling so ill, we decided to head to a park in Sequim, where they ran and ran. Of course it wasn't really legal, but they are creatures of the wild. Skally went into the creek, and Rusty simply marched by my side.

We headed home, and hadn't seen much rain. Skally rode in the front seat with, of course, her head out the window, enjoying the cool breezes along 101 and the Hood's Canal. Then it began to rain. Did this stop her? Certainly Not! By the time we stopped for a rest break just outside Hoodsport at Potlatch Park, her head and upper toro were soaked. So, as I closed the window before we got out, she shook all over the interior. I was not amused.

From there, She decided to remain in the back seat, much to Rusty's annoyance. He refused to move over closer to the other window, so Skally straddled him as she kept her head out the window for the next 2.5 hours. Once in a while, though, she re-adjusted, and her feet went into Rusty (he still wouldn't budge. I swear he's ever so stubborn!)and he barked at her. But, she decided it was her car, first, so he could move. Two bull-headed pups.

Monday night, I realized Skally was not walking properly. I watched her closely, and her left leg seemed to be quite stiff. This was concerning. So, I gave her a little hip massage, and she went to sleep in the bed, where I joined her. Eventually, she left and went to the hallway.

Tuesday, we went for an abbreviated walk, as the weather was rather moist, and neither seemed interested in anything longer. She was still stiff. And more so, and demonstrating some pain that night. So I massaged her a bit more - hoping that the morning would find decent weather for a goodly walk, where we could actually go out.

We did head to PetSmart for some snacks (Duck and Yams), and they had a marvelous time sniffing about. After 20 minutes, though, it was time to leave. We came home, did our regular routine and went to bed.

This morning, we got up, and she seemed to be moving much better. Perhaps it was the car ride and the straddling that got her. We had a good hour plus walk at a very nice pace - Rusty, many times, leading the way, and when they were both off leash, he was trotting after Skally! Usually, he's lagged behind. Another sign of progress!

So, now we're home, about to eat our breakfast before I head off to work. This evening, I'm hoping the weather holds out and we can convene with Sonny and Aaron at the park for them to play. It would do us all some good!

Running and Running and Running and.....

Wow.

This week, the boy has really been running a lot! Wednesday night, he and Skally had me chasing them and running from them, and they were having a blast! I was a little fatigued by the time we left!

Rusty was on his feet chasing and sniffing and having a lovely time, while Skally walked about hoping that I would begin again. But no. So, she found a young, un-neutered male who she watched out the corner of her eye; but, alas and alack, he was still a pup, and wanted to run with the other dogs - she demands exclusivity. She's a princess that way.

Well, last night I ran with them, but Rusty kept joining in the pack, and Sonny, a young rescue, decided that he would run away from her, since she LOVES to herd him. So, for nearly an hour and a half, Rusty was going going going going, much to the amazement of the other dog pops and moms who were watching, and have seen him develop over the past 5 weeks.

One thing I noted, was that Rusty is a bit of a pill. He really wants the dogs to run for him to chase them. But he's a good pill. When he and another dog had Sonny pinned to the ground, I called him and he turned and came right away - but then ran back once I gave him permission. He was a dog in heaven!

When we came home, both dogs crashed! I fed them, and they scarfed down their meals (of course I gave them a little steak with their meals - maybe that helped, but it was really only gilding the lily with their hunger!). Then they fell asleep. They awoke only to have their nylabone dessert, and then were comatose until bed time, which was only walking from one room, down the hallway and into the bedroom.

This morning, Rusty was a little slow in getting up - slower than yesterday, which was another slow start - usually he's up and gadding about within a few minutes of my slogging around the kitchen. Skally was a little tired, as well, but she was really raring to go when walk-time came about.

Rusty was quite slow on the walk today - yesterday was a good one, with the challenge to walk all the way up to the top of 185th and through the new neighborhood. I love the sparkle of the lights below - you can see Hillsboro, North Plains, Beaverton, and the West Hills of Portland - but today we went on our usual trek. He seemed inclined to just walk a block and then return. Even this, though, seemed a challenge. But we did it. And once we hit the grade school, he was showing his fatigue. However, he rose to the challenge and came galumphing up to me at the gate and his pace quickened as we headed back up the hill to home.

Now, he's quietly dozing next to me, awaiting his breakfast. Skally is in the hallway with one eye open. We'll see how active they are this afternoon.

To be honest, the pallor of death has lifted from the house. It feels alive again after the deaths of Cubby and Syd, which still smart and make me quite sad. I verily miss them so much, as does Skally. But the enervation of Rusty has helped raise the optimism and life which once was here - we're nearly normal, but it will be difficult to say we'll ever be the same without our wonderful Ba's.

Becoming a dog

After a very long walk in the morning, which Rusty seemed to really enjoy, I was impressed. He is becoming more and more of a dog. He is lifting his leg, doing a paw wipe after pees and poops, and playing well with most other dogs. He really seems to enjoy the park!

I had a chat with Skally and Rusty on Sunday. There still seems to be something missing in their relationship - that there truly is one - and if we're going to be a successful pack, this needs to stop!

I explained to Skally and Rusty that they both have different jobs. Skally's is to hunt, and Rusty's is to herd. They might need to figure out how they are going to blend the two so they can play, but that is up to them.

So, later, after returning from Sunday dinner, I gave them both their chew bones. They lay quite close to each other. I stayed in the room, sat down and watched - just in case. Success!

Yesterday, Monday, I noticed there was a little more interplay between them. And when we got to the park, they sort of stuck around each other. In fact, at one point, whilst I was at the picnic table jabbering with Victor, Aaron and other dog owners, I noticed they were laying side-by-side. Could this mean progress? I surely hope so!

Rusty was attacked by Muffin, a small mixed breed, when Muffin brought his ball over by Rusty and Rusty dared to sniff it. I was impressed that Rusty fought back - but he wasn't quite as spry as the 35 pounder, and his ear was slightly chewed - but no blood, and he seemed shaken, but not stirred.

This morning, though, Rusty kept shaking his head as though something was amiss in his ear. He was much slower this morning, and although we took a shorter walk (he and Skally really played hard last night), he kept shaking his head, which worries me.

Upon our return, I did a little cleaning with some ear swabs, and there was dirt. I mean dirt! I got a bit out, and the shaking stopped. Hopefully this was all it was, but I need to keep watching.

Now that order seems to have come to our little manse, Skally is being a little mischievous, and it does my heart so much good. Now, before we eat and I head out, they are resting happily.

Life is good.

4 weeks and still changing!

Wow!

Rusty is herding. But, there is unrest on the homefront. Skally has decided he needs to leave. She's not very thrilled with his presence. Apparently, she has been enjoying her ability to free-feed, and Rusty has taken it upon himself, of late, to take advantage of that.

This morning, he was caught eating her food - which is quite different from hers. This was my suspicion, yesterday, when he suddenly was pooping up a storm - and I don't mean small ones - I mean gargantuan ones - and his body seemed to have grown a little. Hmmmmmmmmm.

This morning, after he was caught, I re-fed Skally, and he had nothing (it was all left over from last night, and she had barely touched her food - about 2 cups worth). He is currently lying, repentant, next to me as I write this.

This week, I went back to the old grind. Upon my return, Rusty went straight outside and did his deed. It was rather warm, and neither of the pups wanted to go outside much - they preferred the A/C in the house, which was nearly 20 degrees cooler. I couldn't blame them.

We walked, though, and day-by-day, Rusty has grown stronger. Our walks are longer, and faster. Skally appreciates this, and Rusty has begun to demonstrate some interesting personality traits.

Rusty now barks at me if he feels I'm not doing what he wants. This was a shock, from a dog who, I was told, doesn't bark. When I give him a direction, he seems to understand and then does it - as in, "Go chase those dogs!" We spent nearly 3 hours at the park yesterday, before the temperatures got above 85, and then home before noon, so they could rest, and cool off.

On Friday evening, I played with Skally in the backyard, and Rusty joined in. Skally liked ME playing with her, but when Rusty came into the picture, she glared at me, barked, and then turned and went inside. Obviously, she believes him to be the alpha now, and after 13 years, this doesn't sit right with her. I don't blame her. Yet, at the park, they go their separate ways, and she is somewhat content.

However, I did take Rusty to meet my neighbor's dogs, and when I opened the gate, Frenchie rushed Rusty, and began to attack him. Rusty just sat there. Luckily he has thick fur around his neck, and Frenchie is a boxer, so no damage was done. So, this didn't work out well.

He is still my shadow. He is still galumphing around the yard and the park. He rolls around on his back and has fits of energy that are truly delightful. He loves bones. He loves lying in the doorways and hallways blocking any and all traffic. He is becoming a little more comfortable. Whew!

This morning it's to the park, walk, and then yard work. The pups should be spending some time outside despite the temperature of 95. They prefer to be with me in Hell, rather than sit around luxuriating in the cool of the house...at least for a few minutes.

Rusty avoids water like the plague, so while Skally splashes around in the kiddie pool, or the pond, Rusty simply sips water from the pool, and walks away. Water is not his friend, I believe. It's supposed to rain a little next week, which may prove to be rather interesting to deal with.

I think I can wait.

August 28 - Sunday, Monday Tuesday and Wednesday.

Watching a dog become a dog is rewarding!

Sunday, Rusty began really playing at the park. He and Skally were barking at me after we played in the open field.

There were a couple of dogs who were playing roughly, and one of them was a 7 month old pitbull mix. He was a wild one. Rusty took him on, galumphing after him and barking orders. Skally began playing with a giant schnauzer, and wasn't at all interested in Rusty's shenanigans (it would seem they are finally beginning to bond). After Rusty's romp with the pit, he was proud. He ran over to where Skally and I were, and chest bumped her with a huge grin. Skally was somewhat shocked. Never had anyone, least of all another dog, chest bumped her. This was the beginning of the bond.

On Monday, Rusty was a little tired from all the running about he had done the day before. But we still took our walk - it was 20 minutes longer than normal, but he did it. I went to work, afterward.

Upon my return home, we headed for the park and guess what!? More galumphing and running about! Skally's corgie friend showed up, as well, and they played for quite some time. Rusty tried to play with them, but they shut him out - so he ran after some other dogs.

His energy level is increased, and it's obvious he's losing some weight! He is still having some troubles climbing stairs, but that's about pacing, at this time, rather than an inability; you see, he tries to charge up the stairs which, with his weight, forces his legs to slip. When I walk slowly before him, he tends to have fewer problems. He is getting much better, though.

Tuesday, a brisk walk (how about that!) in the morning, and out to the park in the afternoon. We went to the big dog park, and Rusty began chasing Sonny, the dog from the news who had been stolen from PetSmart's dog adoption program (no, his current people adopted him - he had been returned). Sonny's owner told me that Rusty had bitten his dog, but everything was okay. So, I watched Rusty a little more closely - He did it again with another dog - but it wasn't a bite. In his attempts to herd & chase the other dogs, Rusty mouths them or jabs at them with his nose - quite interesting. I told Sonny's dad, and we watched and realized this was true. Thank goodness - I thought I was going to have a problem! Pepper, the park mascot (for all intents and purposes), has begun to like Rusty. She caters more to Skally - they're both alpha females, but Pepper, a pit bull mix, succumbs to Skally's wishes, and is quite submissive to her!

We then took a good walk, and home for dinner and bones.

Wednesday, more of the same. Good walk, and in the evening (I was a little later coming home) the park. Tonight Rusty demonstrated dominance. He began to hump Sonny as Sonny was dominating another dog. I was a little shocked! But we laughed. He did it again later, but it did me good to see his joints were becoming a little looser.

He ran a little more, and with more dexterity - his turns and his moves showed more finesse. Impressive!

A walk then dinner and chewies. He slept quite well!

The Week's End

Well, Rusty had his nails taken WAAAAY in yesterday, after a very long 2.25 mile walk. Neither he nor Skally were very cooperative with the ladies at the salon, but once I had left, they were marvelous.

Afterward, we went to the park where Rusty began to show his colours as a herder; he took on two puppies that were racing about - infringing on his lounging territory, as it were, and he got up and began to manage them. It was intriguing to see him in action - of course, it was slightly glompy - insofar as his ability to move quickly, but he served the purpose. He's beginning to take on some tasks and feeling pretty darn good about them.

He is beginning to enjoy the yard. It would seem he is not liking the idea of the doggie door - if I am not there, then he won't use it - I need to hold it open and then he begrudgingly uses it. Not sure what to do on this on. I tried treats, but still nothing - Cubby & Syd took to it so fast. But then, they were outside so much of the time, and had also been members of the pack for years. Perhaps, soon, Skally will take him under her muzzle and force him to use it.

This morning he was quick and moving through the walk very well. Of course we did it later than usual, and he is sniffing more. There is still hair coming from him that demonstrates more brushing is required, but his shape and all that is coming through nicely. His coat and skin are beginning to show great lustre.

He is still my little shadow - but it is Skally who shares the bed with me, and moves my body about at night so I wake up in odd configurations - with her laying perpendicular, and me as well, in the morning light. I had no idea I was such a pushover in my sleep.

Thursday, August 25

Wow.

Yesterday, Rusty cascaded down the back stairs into the yard and his leg seemed a little dinged up. I was quite worried - so for the most part of the day, he wasn't allowed out the door to the yard.

This afternoon, after lunch with Miss Yvonne, I stopped by Parr Lumber and bought some strip stuff for stairs, that would give grip to his and Skally's pads, along with some nails, to ensure they would stay.

I got home this evening, before I needed to head out again, and put them on. He still slipped - but not much. It was with great facility he glided down, and his upward climb was much less of a trial.

Now, the good news.

Whilst in the yard, Skally was talking trash to me and Rusty kept coming out to go down, but I was in the midst of putting on the strips. Finally, when I finished, Rusty came down, and I cleaned up the strip mess. Then, back in the yard, Skally wanted to play "Cat & Mouse". I roared at her and she began to bark - with that mischievous grin (note the spelling on "Mischievous - there is no "e" sound after the 'v', so stop mispronouncing it, please!), then she hied herself into the shrubs with me following and her barking - of course, Rusty had to join in. When she tried to get out, he was waiting for her - this she found to be not so good. But she still slammed her way out through the shrubs, past a barking Rusty, and around again, now that I was out. She then ran, bouncing in her girlie way, into the thick of the laurel bushes. I sent Rusty after her and he did- bounding away. He caught her and she turned.

This went on for about 10 minutes until they were both tired. There was no nastiness, and they began to bond a bit more. My heart is doing well.

Now, there is the issue of the doggie door. I did convince Rusty to use it to come out at one point, and then, just to begin adjusting him to it, I had him go back in using it - this required much less coaxing. Now, I need to get him to grow more comfortable using it so he can utilize it whilst I'm at work once classes begin, and I shouldn't worry about his bladder bursting in the house! Please pray with me, that this task becomes easier before Monday. :)

Rusty Goes to the Vet

After a very good walk this morning, of approximately 1.5 miles, Rusty stopped only once for a rest - when Skally decided to spend an inordinate amount of time running around the schoolyard, and sniffing, rather than join us, re-leashed, on our hike up the hill to our home.

Of course, he was panting, and you could hear how hot he was, but he continued on upwards actually pulling me and Skally home. This was improvement from earlier, when he would need a few minutes of rest, occasionally, as we progressed on this same morning hike.

That afternoon, we drove down to Aloha Cat and Dog, where he was to see his new doctor, Doctor Leddy, who was also Skally's doctor. I came prepared with the morning's stool sample in the little black plastic bag meant for such an honor. The receptionist made a sour face as I handed it to her, as it seemed that only Dr. Leddy asked such a thing of her patients.

Well, his temperature was normal, and his weight was 87.3 pounds (on Facebook I said 87.5, only because it was an easier number and not as anal as 87.3). He checked out on all counts. Even his stool sample came back negative, which was awesome. His heart, lungs, ears, nose, eyes, and whatever else, passed with flying colours. Yippeee.

Doctor Leddy did tell me he needed to lose some weight (Duhr!). So she told me to bring him in monthly, or at least in 6 months to see how much he had lost. We're gearing toward a 15+ pound loss by December, if possible. His hips have huge fatty pockets on the side, and I feared, at first, they were tumors - but no. Another Hooorrayyy!

So, after his shots, he skedaddled out the door to the car.

One great note, is that his hips and his waist are now showing. When he is on his side, the fleshy folds around his "doodle" are greatly reduced. And, I can see his back paws, now, when he is lying down.

In the afternoon, we went to Hazeldale Dog Park, and he just rested in the heat, in the shade. Skally wanted to go for a walk - if only to run amongst the trees and dip her paws into the creek. Well, that didn't happen, so she had to be content with her wading pool and the pond at home.

That evening, they both had bones to gnaw on - Skally buried hers, and was quite secretive with her burial grounds. She even hid when Rusty and I came into the back yard.

Life is good.

Rusty Goes to the Beach for the First Time

Well, the week began with a quick trip to Cannon Beach, where I needed to take care of a couple of things at the house. I put Rusty and Skally in the backyard, much to their annoyance. Skally howled. Yes, Howled, and Rusty Barked! Then they set upon a mission to find a way out - they couldn't. By this time, though, my mission was complete. As I said, it was a quick trip, and I needed to get back to Portland for an early afternoon appointment.

Yet, there was still time, and I didn't bring them with me to torture them. So, we headed up the street to the beach. Skally and Rusty were both off leash, and they relished in the smells of the neighbors' plants, lush grasses, and the awesome shade. We headed over to the entrance to the beach where Skally went flying down the sand with her tail wagging and her smile radiating through the drab skies. Rusty stayed close, and upon feeling the sand, he hesitated. He wasn't sure. This being his first venture to the beach, he had no clue, and it was a bit overwhelming.

I headed down and looked back - Rusty was slogging through the dry sand - and as he was more laden with weight than Skally, it was more difficult. Skally was running between logs on her way to the water. Rusty went down and just lay there. I summoned him and he tentatively got up and began moving toward me. After about 30 feet, he went down again. He looked quite worried.

Skally was splashing around in the water with some people watching her and some taking pictures. She was in her element, and she was going to, by God, make the most of it. Rusty, on the other hand, had to be coaxed to the wet sand, and when he made it, he stayed very close by.

We walked up to Ecola Creek and then past the town, next to the water. There wasn't much of a crowd on the beach, but there were a number of tourists at the top of the staircase. We continued up to the school, with Rusty panting with a look of worriment. He never once set foot in the water, while Skally was all over - in the water, up the beach and running around as though it was her first taste of it all.

We finally headed back (time was nearly up for this venture), and walked up close to the wall, where we headed in on the grass and through the lawn to the staircase that took us to First Street. We then headed down to the house, and made our way back to Beaverton.

Rusty's breathing has gradually grown better, as has his pace in walking. His pads are callousing well, and he seems more sure of himself. He is my little shadow, now, and reminds me of Cubby with his demeanor, although he rarely attacks and bites like Cubby - he's more passive. However, this will not be his last trip to the coast. Another will be coming soon, and hopefully he will be in better shape and able to appreciate it and enjoy it.

Week Two

This week we walked. We groomed. We actually barked and trotted behind Skally. We even made attempts to play with other dogs and Skally. We grew hungrier and greedier, but there is more life and love.

Rusty has taken to putting his head on my lap and putting his paw on me if he wants attention. He gives me those big eyes that look innocently askance, and manipulate me into giving him lots of attention.

Skally watches him from across the room.

When company comes over - such as Annemarie with her cockapoo, Sammy, Rusty seems eager to participate and he's such a pushover - but I have a feeling his size grants him permission to dominate - especially over Skally. Well, this may change.

His bark - yes he's barking a bit more, now, is high pitched. Skally will begin barking and then I'll bark back and soon we have the three of us smiling and laughing whilst we make the most glorious cacophony! I suppose this is a pack building exercise.

At the park, Rusty is beginning to join us in our chasing about, and he is more lively and more eager to become a part of the pack. Skally is beginning to see him as a non-threat - but he did anger her the other night, and she came at him. He just turned away, which I could tell frustrated her more. But that's the life.

Rusty will have a vet's visit this next week, for the first time in 7 years. We'll know more after this, insofar as his health, and perhaps some issues he may have. I pray he's healthy (and healthier) and on his way to continued life.

Week One Conclusion

Well, by Sunday, Rusty was a new dog. On Thursday, we walked a bit and he enjoyed the dogpark more than usual, with the sniffing, and just some more casual walking about. He also had a goodly walk which, as always, seemed to tire him out.

ON Friday, after a short walk (his pads seem to be callousing well) he went into the groomers. He wasn't all too thrilled about the event, and still unsure of his future when I handed him over - he didn't wish to go. But he did.

When I retrieved him, he was gorgeous, and his nails were clipped. He was greatly glad to see me, and pulled me (I didn't realize his power until now) out of the shop and to the car! Whereupon, he made a valiant attempt to jump in! Apparently, he hated it there, and was very anxious to get away! He wasn't able to make the leap, though, and I hoisted him up. This was a very good sign!

That afternoon, he and Skally took me for a walk through the wooded path near the park - both off leash, and Skally bounded, whilst Rusty trotted near me, occasionally stopping for a good smell.

Saturday, we went to Gabriel Park where he seemed more anxious to lay down and do much of nothing. However, we still walked and he was quite friendly with the other dogs.

I worry about him understanding his lot. I tell him as often as I can, hoping that I'm reaching him, and that he is able to comprehend why he came to live with us. It may be up to Faye, the dog psychic, to communicate all this with him, so his mind may rest at ease. However, he does miss the cats and his home. He does love sneaking over to Skally's food and having a bit of a bite - much to her chagrin. She and I have both stopped him, but he just smiles and walks away, thinking how unfair it is...

Sunday we hit Hondo dog park. He followed, and Skally romped and ran. He's still a little slow, but there is more life to him. Also, at this time, he is more able to go up and down the steps to the back yard, and seems to do so even on his own. This is marvelous!

All in all, this week has been very tough on him. He has been making great strides, and it shows. I'm still having to brush him - and his coat is beginning to cooperate. His teeth are much cleaner and his breathing is better. This may take more time than I had thought, but there are improvements each and every day. I'm hoping Skally begins to accept him.

August 9, 2011 Day 3

Well, we slept in a bit. Then we went walking. Rusty was a little faster, but still sluggish. We went on a longer journey which was about twice as long, and he seemed to do well. Skally got her walk in and seemed to appreciate her "Princess Time" with me.

Another tooth brushing (twice a day, now), and then I headed off to PetUtopia and Petsmart to get more enhanced chicken strips and Nylabones for them. I ended up buying lots of canned food and some plaque enzymes to go into the food, while shopping.

We went to the park, and once again, Rusty parked himself in the shade but not until after he had done some wandering - this was progress! O! how my heart lept for joy. And then he came trotting (note the word 'trotting') over to the picnic table where people were gathered, and he demanded attention from everyone there.

Skally and I went to the open area and we played cat and mouse, where she tries to sneak up on me and I whirl around and she runs away. We did this for a while, with me doing the same to her, and then we chased each other for a bit. I looked up and saw Rusty sitting under a tree watching us. Again. Progress.

We came home and he ate heartily, followed with a toothbrushing and a treat for them both. His breathing seemed to be growing less labored, and he was beginning to exhibit signs of a loving personality - even with Skally eyeballing him from across the room.

Skally wasn't too sure even at this point, about Rusty. She has accepted the fact he is here, and as he is not a female, she isn't the typical bully she tends to be. She came at him once when he seemed to want her food in her bowl, but that was settled as soon as it happened. However, the bonding between them has a ways to go.

He slept better, and I found that I was able to sleep through the night without waking up to his wheezing and snorts. This was great comfort.

August 8, 2011 Day Two

Up we sprang at 4:15 am. The skies were still dark and Skally was still asleep in the hallway. Rusty followed me to the front door and went out, painfully, to relieve himself.

Both dogs were given a chicken strip, and Rusty had an edible pill for joint strength and lubrication, followed by a thorough brushing of his teeth. He seemed to accept it and smacked his hearty jowls afterward.

Then once I had some coffee and was dressed, the three of us headed out for a short walk (the same as the night before) for Rusty. He moved sluggishly and painfully. I was afraid of pushing him too hard, lest his heart burst, or he lose any sense of mobility. It was apparent he hadn't been walked before, as his pads seemed to be too soft on the pavement and gravel of the paths through the greenways. Once home, he headed straight to the water bowl and drank and drank. Then Skally was taken for her walk - a much longer one and must faster paced.

At home, Rusty was given a half cup of his regular food (Beneful - his owners told me it was the best they could afford), and a near half cup of Aveno for his coat and skin. I also added a scoop of Spunk II, which has enzymes, condroiton, glucosamine, and other nutrients needed for the senior dog. I then added a forkful of canned dog food. He sniffed at it, and then ate some.

Needing to attend a conference that day, I took him outside in the backyard and let him wander - which for him was only to the brick and tie step to the yard. He lay down and just breathed. His breathing was still labored. Eventually, just before leaving, I hoisted him back up, leaving the back door open (I noted the day before he had some troubles squeezing through the doggie door, which Skally so skillfully uses). I then left for the conference.

Upon returning, I let him out the front door, and he let loose. He had held all that water in him all day. I couldn't believe it. We then went to the car and headed to the dog park.

At the dog park, Rusty came in a ways, sniffed a couple of the dogs, and then lay down in the shade. Skally found an un-neutered 2 year old corgie and she began her "Cougar Dance" with him.

After an hour or so, we walked out to walk around the park. Rusty moved tentatively, and wasn't as agile as 12 year old Skally. So, we kept walking, though, as he didn't seem to want to stop. Finally, we ended up in the car, with him absolutely worn out.

We got home and he didn't want to get out of the car. After great coaxing and pulling and prodding, he finally did. He came in and collapsed, then drank water and ate his food. Then he lay down and slept - with still great laborious breaths.

Before bed, his teeth were brushed, and he was allowed out the front door. Then he came back in and lay down in the bedroom, panting. I was positive I would find a dead dog in the morning, and I said a little prayer.

The first day

It wasn't supposed to happen this way. I wasn't going to take on another dog. Cubby and Obsydian had died the previous year - Cubby on January 16, 2010, and Syd on August 23, 2010. Their deaths were devestating. I had had Syd since he was three and a half months old, and Cubby since he was two. Syd was a birthday present in 1996, and the same friends gave me Cubby when they split, in 1999.

Syd had been my constant companion and the one living creature that really knew me best. Of course, when he was three, I rescued Skallywag (nee Rascal) when she was six months old. Syd wasn't too happy, as he was king of the castle, so to speak. So when this 50 pound terrier mix came in, his little Schipperke self was amused for a few hours, then it became war. Eventually, they worked it out, even with the move to a new house, which seemed to cure the territory issues.

Then, along came Cubby, who Syd had befriended over the past year and a half, but when he came in Syd decided to pee all over the video collection and stormed outside. Skally and Cubby became fast mates. They were nearly inseparable, and didn't play a lot with Syd - but they would pack up together at times. These were happy times.

Now, in 2011, August, Skally has spent the better part of the year alone. She seemed to enjoy herself, but there are times when I looked and detected some lingering notes of depression and sadness for the loss of canine companionship.

Out of curiosity, I ventured on to Craigslist and saw Rusty, and 8 year old Border Collie, whose owners had to vacate their premiss due to the economy, and they needed to find homes for their two cats and Rusty.

I thought about this for two days. And then I looked again - I thought, 'If he's still there, then it's meant to be.' He was. I called and 30 minutes later I was driving him home.

When I first saw Rusty, in person, I was a bit taken aback. He was a house dog, who was about 30 or so pounds (give or take - mostly give) overweight. He was in dire need of a brushing, and the owners were heavy smokers. His smile, though, won me over, and I took him to the car - only to have to lift him in as his legs weren't strong enough for the jump.

I got him home, and Skally took a look at him. She was rather aloof. He walked behind her outside, and tried sniffing her, only to be rebuffed. Here was this dog who had invaded her holy territory; the territory where she, Syd and Cubby had spent the majority of their lives living, running, fighting, and enjoying themselves.

So, I took a pair of scissors, and a brush, and worked on him for about an hour and a half. I made a dent, but there was oh, so much more to do! The backyard was covered in hair, and yet he didn't look much different. Skally had been watching from the top of the stairs on the deck - just because she could, and also to determine if I was going to chase her down with the brush, as well (she hates it).

My neighbor, Annmarie came over to meet Rusty. It was then we saw more matting and his teeth - His upper molars were encrusted in a cement-coloured plaque, and I began having some doubts. What was in store for me, but more importantly, what were Rusty's chances of growing healthy and hale. He panted with a rasping and wheezing. I took him for a short short walk and it seemed to be incredibly painful for him - then I noticed his nails were incredibly long. I made a note to phone the groomer down the hill for an appointment to bathe, brush and clip his nails.

My back was beginning to scream at me from carrying him up the flight of steps from the yard. It was then I realized I could let him out the front door, he would waddle to the lawn, and do his business, then turn around and walk back in. Oh Sweet Jesus, Thank you!

That night, August 7, 2011, Rusty whined for his home. I felt terribly bad for him, and he lay on the floor next to my bed. His breathing was labored and hard. I wasn't able to sleep much that night, and I was concerned that perhaps he had a bad heart, and wasn't going to live much longer - that was something I wasn't sure Skally nor I could deal with again, in this short of a time.
